In August 2017, the band NCT 127 released a song called 'Cherry bomb' as a marketing campaign they created a dance cover contest to go along side the release of the song. The initiative was that they released a version of their dance which their fans would recreate, video and post on YouTube so they could react to them. This created a buzz with the fans because of course they would want their dance to be seen by a band that they love. Since lots of fans will have re-created the dance it means that their song would get out there more and it basically gets free advertisement.

The video of them announcing the competition gained 2.8 million views, and the video of them reacting to the dance covers gained 2.9 million.

These kind of competitions are done a lot, especially in the Kpop community. This is because they are basically free advertising for the song.
