Social media dance trends

There are a multitude of dance crazes throughout the years, not only on social media. However it has become a massive thing that is associated with social media. I decided to do some research into them, since that is part of my artefact, and it helps me to see what made these dances so viral.

2010: The Dougie- this is from a song called 'Teach me how to Dougie' by a group called Cali Swagg District. The dance was named after the famous rapper Doug E. Fresh, who was known for dancing in his performances.

2011: Cat Daddy- this is a dance that came from Californian-based rap group, the Rej3ctz.

2012: Gangnam style- this is a song that was released by K-Pop singer PSY, in 2012.

2013: Harlem Shake- this is a dance that became a viral meme. The dance mixed two dances called 'Humpin' and 'The Bernie'.

2014: Shmoney dance- Rapper Bobby Shmurda came out with the single that incorporated the 'Schmoney dance'.

2015: Whip/Nae Nae- this was a dance that was created by rapper Silento which went along side a song of the same name.

2016: Juju on that beat- rappers Zarion McCall and Day Hilfigerrr created the 'Juju on the beat'. The dance was most popular with children and young teens, and many 'Challenges' were posted online.

2017: Floss- this became famous when 16-year-old Russell Horning, also known as the backpack kid, started posting videos of him doing the dance. Once it became viral he even performed his dance on Saturday Night Live with Katy Perry. This dance made resurgence again when used in the game Fortnight.

2018: In my feelings (Kiki Challenge)- the 'Do the Shiggy' or 'Kiki Challenge' became popular when Instagram influencer Shiggy created a dance to Drake's single 'In my feelings'. Thousands of social media user and celebrities decided to join in on the challenge and post videos of themselves dancing online.

2019: The woah- this dance has become very popular on social media, with rappers Chance the rapper, Lil Uzi Vert, Drake, and Travis Scott all participating in the dance trend.

From reading this article I realised that the most recent ones mostly become viral because of social media, and celebrities endorsing them.
